Learning Objectives

 

¨      Enhance prevention efforts by learning mistakes made in diagnosis & treatment of combat vets in earlier wars.

¨      Develop a working vocabulary of military & VA terms in order to understand the culture of the military and VA personnel.

¨      Improve clinical assessment of trauma victims in terms of PTSD and other co-morbid conditions: suicide, homeless-ness, addiction, panic disorder and traumatic brain injuries.

¨      Demonstrate treatment techniques for survivors & significant others in order to prevent sub clinical and acute disorders from becoming chronic PTSD

¨       Apply lessons learned to a new generation of military veterans and civilian survivors of trauma to break through barriers to recovery.

This workshop introduces the history of our understanding of war trauma, various DSM diagnostic criteria, assessment and treatment techniques. Information is presented in a lecture format, with ample Power Point slides, group discussion, role plays and exercises. Participants receive an annotated bibiliography of useful research and web based resources on the topic of PTSD. Dr. Law shares his 35 years of experience in treating veterans with combat related PTSD, including the development of in-patient treatment protocols, the VA's outreach (Vet Center) program, and how to overcome bureaucratic hurdles to treatment. Dr. Law provides insight into the military culture, military terms and vocabulary, and current attempts to prevent the development of traumatic stress disorders.
